Bistrita is the capital city of the Bistrita-Nasaud district, in the historical region of Transylvania, by the Bistrita river. The oldest remains of settlements in the area date from the Neolithic era. The Transylvanian Saxons settled in the region in 1206,, calling it Nö, snerland. A document from the year 1241 describes how the Mongols, on their advance towards central Europe, destroyed Markt Nosa (Nö, sen Market). Situated at a junction of various trade routes, medieval Bistrita flourished as a commercial centre. Until 1465, The city was fortified with 18 towers and bastions defended by locals. Nowadays, it is one of the most visited towns in the country.
