The countries known as the Balkans are those located along the peninsula which takes its name from the Balkan mountains. These countries include: Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Slovenia, Greece, Macedonia, Montenegro, Romania, Serbia, Kosovo and Istanbul. The term is often extended to cover other countries such as Hungary, Romania, Moldova and Ukraine as although geographically they are not located in the Balkan peninsula their history and culture is closely related to these countries. Travel to the Balkans and discover the history of these countries many of which still bear the scars of the two wars that they have lived through.
