Skopje, the capital of North Macedonia, sits on the banks of the Vardar River and showcases a unique blend of Ottoman heritage, modernist buildings and large-scale contemporary monuments. Must-see spots include Kale Fortress, the Stone Bridge and the traditional Old Bazaar. A noteworthy fact is that Skopje is the birthplace of Mother Teresa, with a dedicated memorial in the city center that honors her humanitarian work.
