Tourist attractions Shirakawa-go

Shirakawa-go is a historic mountain village with a snowy climate located near Mount Hakusan. The village is especially notable for its traditional farmhouses, called gassho-zukuri, that feature steep thatched roofs designed to let the snow shed more easily. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Shirakawa-go’s remoteness made it one of the last places in Japan to enter the modern era and remained essentially isolated until the 1950s.
